cated not far from other prehistoric sites \ATXnt902 near\ATXnt0 Avebury in southern England, it is probably EuropeÆs largest barrow dating back to this period. Barrows are long mounds covering or containing a chambered tomb, and for a long time this
is what \ATXnt903 Silbury Hill\ATXnt0 was thought to be. However, excavation by tunnelling in 1776, 1849 and 1968-70 revealed no traces of a burial chamber, so the mound remains archaeologically enigmatic.\par
